Protect the business behind every service window

A customer can slip beside your truck or make a claim involving the food you served. General liability, including applicable product liability, helps address covered claims. Explain your menu, cooking setup and events so the quote reflects how you operate.

Cover your customers and the food you serve

Discuss injury, property damage and food-related claims. Include catering, event service and any alcohol sales so the agency can identify the appropriate liability coverage.

Insure the truck for its business use

Arrange commercial auto for driving and vehicle liability. Describe the truck or trailer, drivers, operating radius and equipment attached to it.

Protect your mobile kitchen

Include cooking equipment, generators, refrigerators and other property. Ask about coverage for equipment breakdown or food spoilage when those losses would interrupt service.

Look after the people on your crew

Workers’ compensation addresses employee injuries. Give the agency your payroll, employee duties and seasonal staffing so it can apply the state requirements below.

Bring a festival or venue’s insurance requirements if you have them. Include any requested additional-insured wording, coverage limits and event dates in your quote request.

These are separate coverage needs. Available products and terms depend on your work, location and insurer; a liability quote does not automatically include every policy above.

Which food truck coverages should you compare?

What you need to protect What to compare
Customer injuries, slips and accidental property damage General liability, including products / completed operations for food you prepare and serve.
Illness allegations tied to your menu How the liability policy treats foodborne illness, catering off the truck and any liquor exposure.
Crew injuries on the truck, at prep or while loading Workers’ compensation (state rules differ — see requirements above).
The truck, trailer and road risk Commercial auto / business vehicle coverage separate from general liability.
Cookers, refrigeration, POS and stock Inland marine / equipment and any spoilage or interruption options.
Event, commissary or city certificates Written COI limits, additional-insured wording and effective dates — not the certificate alone.

General liability and food you serve

Ask how products and completed operations apply to food you prepare and serve. Illness allegations and customer slips are usually GL questions. Do not assume a package automatically includes catering or alcohol if you add them later.

Commercial auto, equipment and event certificates

Tell the auto insurer about business use, who drives, trailer towing and overnight parking. Personal auto policies typically exclude food-truck business use. Physical damage and equipment in transit are separate from liability limits. Match each city’s written COI brief before you send a certificate.

How much does Kansas food truck insurance cost?

Insureon’s national food-truck customer medians (page updated September 18, 2026; rechecked November 2, 2026) provide a starting reference: a business owner’s policy $96/month ($1,147/year), general liability $37/month ($440/year), workers’ compensation $46/month ($550/year), liquor liability $64/month ($769/year), commercial auto $209/month ($2,509/year), and cyber $129/month ($1,552/year). These are national Insureon food-truck customer medians — not Kansas-specific rates and not Simply Business prices.

Do not add every row together. A business owner’s policy can bundle general liability with property, so those lines may overlap. Workers’ compensation, commercial auto, liquor and cyber remain separate questions. Your provider needs the menu, events, revenue, payroll, vehicles, claims, limits and equipment values to quote the actual truck.

Request an annual total for the same service mix and coverage dates. Ask whether payment plans, certificates, additional-insured endorsements or midyear changes add charges.

Review the annual total, deductible and limits together. Include any required endorsements so the quote prices the protection your work calls for. A business owner’s policy can combine liability and property coverage; those costs can overlap.

Kansas insurance requirements for food truck operators

Use your licensing rules and written customer requirements to set the coverage you need. Give the agency those documents so it can check the quote against them.

Kansas uses a payroll trigger, not a headcount trigger. Under K.S.A. 44-505, the Workers Compensation Act generally does not apply to a private employer whose total gross annual payroll for the preceding calendar year was not more than $20,000 (and who reasonably estimates the current year will also stay at or below that amount), with agricultural exceptions separately stated. All payroll counts, including out-of-state wages. For sole proprietors and partnerships, wages paid to the owners and certain family members are excluded from the payroll computation; for corporations, family-payroll exclusions do not apply the same way.

Once you are subject to the Act, secure coverage and file accident reports as required. Employers below the threshold may voluntarily elect coverage. Buying general liability does not satisfy a workers’ compensation duty that has attached. Kansas is a private-carrier market.

Commercial auto for the truck is still a separate product from food-business liability — even when you are under the WC payroll threshold.

Mobile food permits versus certificates of insurance

Kansas licenses food establishments — including mobile food units — through the Kansas Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Lodging program. Mobile applicants typically submit the food-establishment application with a Mobile Unit Log and complete a licensing inspection. That state food license is a sanitation credential. Materials reviewed for this page do not publish a statewide general-liability dollar floor as a condition of the KDA license itself.

Cities such as Wichita and other municipalities can still require separate mobile-vendor licenses and certificates of insurance. Treat those dollar amounts as local or contract requirements — do not copy them onto the statewide KDA license.

Simply Business is a business insurance agency. Start with your business details to see available coverage and prices for your work.

  1. Describe your business. Describe your food truck, menu, service locations and crew. Include catering, alcohol sales, vehicle use and venue requirements where they apply.
  2. Review the available coverage and price. Match the limits, covered activities and dates to your requirements. You choose whether to purchase.
  3. Put your policy and proof of insurance in place. Once the policy is issued, request your certificate and check the start date before sending proof of coverage to a customer.

A certificate of insurance shows your existing coverage. It does not add coverage or make a customer an additional insured; that may require a policy endorsement.

Kansas food truck insurance questions

When does a Kansas food truck need workers’ compensation?

For an existing employer, the small-payroll exclusion requires payroll of $20,000 or less in the preceding calendar year and a reasonable estimate of $20,000 or less for the current year. A new employer without a prior payroll year uses the current-year estimate. Count wages inside and outside Kansas. The family-wage exclusion does not apply to corporations. Eligible excluded employers may elect coverage.

Does KDA require statewide general liability for a mobile food license?

No statewide GL dollar floor was identified as part of the KDA Food Establishment / mobile-unit license. Cities and events often still demand certificates with stated limits.

Does general liability cover the Kansas food truck on the road?

No. Commercial auto is separate. Confirm business use and drivers with an auto insurer.

Does a city COI requirement become a statewide mandate?

No. Municipal vendor insurance lists are local. Match each city’s written brief without treating it as a KDA statewide floor.
