Choose a New York lender by county before choosing a loan

A lender based in New York City may serve only selected counties, while another program accepts businesses statewide. Then operating history matters: New York Forward’s one-year rule can exclude a borrower who fits a separate community product. Check both before assembling an application.

Provider or program What it offers First check
New York Forward Loan Fund 2 Working-capital loans up to $150,000 for eligible operating businesses. At least one year in business; additional revenue, employee and repayment rules apply.
State Small Business Revolving Loan Fund Round 2 Loans through community-based organizations with different service areas. Use Empire State Development’s lender list to check your county.
Accompany Capital microloans A $1,000–$50,000 microloan route in New York City’s five boroughs. Its listed requirements include positive operating cash flow; ask about the exact product.

Selected financing routes, not a ranking of every lender. Check current availability and written terms.

New York Forward: check the one-year threshold

The New York Forward Loan Fund 2 FAQ lists existing New York operations, at least one year in business, no more than 100 full-time employees and gross annual revenue below $5 million. Applicants must demonstrate repayment capacity using prior and projected cash flow.

The program lists loans up to $150,000, repayment periods of 36–72 months and fixed rates determined using its prime-based formula. Request the current rate for the proposed term. A dated prime-rate example on a website is not today’s offer.

After pre-application matching, the borrower chooses a nonprofit lender to connect with. Keep that introduction separate from approval. A company with six months of sales should investigate other products rather than assume that a good month overrides the one-year requirement.

Use the state’s lender list to separate NYC, regional and statewide options

Empire State Development’s Round 2 lender directory identifies each participating organization’s service area. Its list includes statewide organizations, Adirondack-region coverage and lenders serving New York City or nearby counties. Start with the county where the business operates.

The state contribution is only part of how a participating loan is funded. Do not read a program contribution cap as the total amount you can borrow. The community lender sets the applicable offering and handles the application.

For example, a Queens operator and an Adirondack operator should not start with the same local shortlist merely because both search for “New York business loans.” Confirm the lender’s service area, then ask about industry, operating history and permitted use. Keep the contact details and document checklist for the specific product you discuss.

New York startup loans: distinguish launch support from operating-cash-flow rules

Accompany Capital’s microloan page lists New York City’s five boroughs, loans of $1,000–$50,000 and positive cash flow from operations among its requirements. It states no minimum credit score, but also assesses repayment behavior. That does not make the product an automatic fit for a pre-revenue startup.

If you have not opened, ask a lender explicitly whether it funds pre-opening expenses. The SBA microloan program can support startups through intermediaries, subject to their requirements. A startup budget needs supplier quotes, owner investment and a credible way to meet payments before sales stabilize.

A child-care operator may also see a separate Accompany product for NYC child care. Check that product’s rules directly; do not transfer its criteria to every trade. For a new home-service company, keep licensing, insurance and vehicle needs visible in the New York business-opening checklist.

New York SBA loans are a separate comparison

New York Forward and the state revolving-loan program are separate from an SBA 7(a) loan. A New York owner considering equipment, working capital or a business purchase can ask an SBA lender about 7(a), then compare its required contribution and closing process with the community-lender proposal.

For owner-occupied premises or qualifying long-life equipment, investigate SBA 504 through a Certified Development Company. It does not provide ordinary inventory or working capital. A property budget that omits the cash needed to keep trading will be incomplete even if the building financing is approved.

Compare commercial financing for an operating New York business

Commercial financing can provide another comparison for a New York business with documented sales, including one too young for New York Forward. Confirm each provider’s own criteria and compare it with an appropriate community-lender quote. The state program and an online marketplace are separate routes.

Fora Financial: check your business against the criteria

Fora’s published operating-history threshold is shorter than New York Forward’s. Revenue, credit and repayment capacity still matter; compare the complete criteria below.

  • Starting criteria include 6+ months operating and a 570+ credit score.
  • The product page lists $240,000 annual revenue; the FAQ lists $17,000 monthly. Confirm the applicable minimum.
  • Loan repayments are daily or weekly, subject to your written terms and underwriting.

Prepare a county-specific application and a useful comparison

Record the operating county, age of the business and requested use at the top of your funding summary. Those facts help a community lender place the request in the correct program before you upload a full file.

  • For New York Forward: reconcile prior sales and projected cash flow with the loan payment.
  • For a community lender: ask whether the quoted loan uses Round 2 funds and which product conditions apply.
  • For a startup: separate projected receipts from bank deposits already received, and document the source of your contribution.

Request the net amount deposited and a complete repayment schedule from every provider. A lower monthly payment can reflect a longer term, so also compare the total amount paid. The loan types guide helps distinguish credit lines, term loans and other structures.

Before choosing a New York financing route

  • Verify your county against the community lender’s current service area.
  • Keep New York Forward’s one-year threshold separate from another lender’s startup product.
  • Ask for a current written rate rather than relying on a dated prime-rate example.

New York business loan questions

Is New York Forward available to a brand-new business?

The current Loan Fund 2 FAQ requires at least one year in business. A pre-revenue startup should ask community lenders about a separate startup product or an SBA microloan intermediary.

Does a New York City lender necessarily serve the rest of the state?

No. Empire State Development’s participating-lender list separates service areas, and individual loan products can have narrower coverage. Confirm your county and the specific product before applying.

Does no minimum credit score mean my New York loan will be approved?

No. Accompany Capital’s microloan page states no minimum score, but includes positive operating cash flow and repayment-behavior requirements. Other lenders use their own underwriting criteria.
