Why it matters for small businesses

  • Pet businesses like grooming, dog walking, boarding and training do best where people spend the most per pet household. See what sole proprietors earn by state.
  • Mobile services such as van-based grooming cut overhead and fit rural, high-spending states.
  • Insurance matters. Caring for other people’s animals carries real risk, so most pet businesses carry liability coverage.
