When does America decide to start a business? The search data has a clear answer, and it is not
New Year’s Day. The table below tracks twelve months of U.S. search volume for one
“decision query” per industry — how to start a cleaning business,
how to start a food truck, and so on. Seven of the ten peak in August or
September. January is a real but secondary bump. The trades with their own calendars are
the exceptions: landscaping peaks in April (2.4× its November trough,
the biggest swing of any meaningful-volume query here) and HVAC in July, at the
height of air-conditioning season.

Peak month bolded per row. Swing = peak month ÷ lowest month. The tree service row is
included for completeness but its volumes (10–30 searches/month for this exact phrase) are
small enough that Google’s rounding drives the apparent swing — treat it as noise.
What the calendar means in practice
- The late-summer surge is the underappreciated one. August–September is
the annual high for cleaning, food trucks, salons, massage, dealer licensing, and private
investigation — a back-to-school reset that outdraws New Year’s resolutions in every
one of those trades. - Seasonal trades research in their season, launch late. Landscaping interest
peaks in April — when the mowing season has already started. A founder who wants to
operate in April needs licenses, registration, and insurance settled in winter; our
state landscaping guides cover the lead times. - Flat curves mean career decisions, not weather. Massage therapy barely moves
(1.2×) — school-enrollment decisions happen year-round. Compare what those careers pay
in wages by state. - December is the universal trough. No tracked trade peaks in November or
December — which makes winter the least crowded time to do the licensing homework the
January-and-August crowds will be starting cold.
Frequently asked questions
What month do most people research starting a business?
Across the ten service industries we track, late summer dominates: seven of the ten decision queries peak in August or September — not January. New Year’s ambition is real (January is a secondary bump for most trades), but the back-to-school season is when ‘how to start a cleaning business’ and its cousins hit their annual highs.
Which startup searches are the most seasonal?
Landscaping swings hardest among the meaningful-volume queries: April searches for starting a landscaping business run 2.4 times the November trough. Salon (2.3x, low in June) and food truck (2.2x, low in December) follow. Massage therapy is the flattest at 1.2x — career interest there barely moves with the calendar.
When should I launch to catch the wave?
Work backward from licensing time, not from the search peak. If interest in your trade peaks in spring (landscaping) and your state’s licensing takes 60-90 days, the research-and-apply window is mid-winter. Each industry link in the table goes to our state-by-state licensing guides with the actual timelines.
Where do these numbers come from?
Google Ads monthly search volume for one representative ‘how to start’ query per industry, U.S. searches, August 2025 through July 2026, retrieved August 2026 via the DataForSEO API. Google rounds volumes to buckets, so small movements are not meaningful — the tree service row’s 3x swing is rounding noise on a 10-30 searches-per-month query, which is why we flag it.
Sources and method
| Source | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Google Ads monthly search volume (Keyword Planner metric) | U.S. monthly search volume, August 2025 through July 2026, for one representative decision query per industry. Google reports these volumes in rounded buckets, so single-bucket movements are not meaningful. |
| DataForSEO Keyword Data API | How we retrieved the Google Ads figures, in a single call on August 26, 2026. |
What you can and cannot check here. Google Ads search volumes are not published at a free public URL, so unlike our Census-based tables these numbers cannot be independently re-pulled by a reader. We retain the dated dataset behind this page and re-checked every monthly cell against it on September 6, 2026. Treat the shape of each curve, not the absolute volume, as the finding.
One query per trade keeps the comparison clean but understates total interest, because each trade has many related queries. Peak months were stable across the phrasings we checked; absolute volumes are not comparable across industries with different vocabulary habits.
