Alabama: distinguish a lending program from an equity investment

Alabama’s SSBCI funding has two different routes. A local service business looking for borrowed working capital should investigate the lending route; a company seeking investors is making a different decision. Name the purpose of the money before choosing an application.

Provider or program What it covers First check
LendAL Credit support through participating lenders Use the approved lender list or borrower interest form.
Communities Unlimited $1,000–$200,000 on its current program page Check collateral, guarantee and startup income criteria.
AssistAL / Alabama SBDC Financing-readiness assistance Ask for help assembling the request and projections.

Selected routes, not a ranking of every lender. Limits and availability should be confirmed directly.

Communities Unlimited: a community-lending option in Alabama

Communities Unlimited’s current lending page lists $1,000–$200,000 business loans and includes Alabama in its service area. Uses include working capital, equipment, inventory, contract fulfillment and business acquisition.

The listed criteria require collateral, a personal guarantee and automatic monthly payments. Startups must have another source of income. Ask the lender which records demonstrate that income and what collateral it will consider. Its current page has a higher maximum than its older loan flyer, so use a current written quote rather than a saved brochure.

Starting an Alabama business with little or no revenue

An idea and a loan amount are not yet a financing plan. For a new Alabama business, write down what the money buys, what you contribute and when customers are expected to pay. If you have employment or other income during launch, document it instead of relying on a verbal estimate.

A contractor preparing for a new job can separate materials, labor and the gap before the customer pays. A shop opening to the public needs a different schedule for deposits, fit-out and inventory. Both should show what happens if revenue starts later than planned. These examples help organize a request; they do not replace the lender’s underwriting.

LendAL: find a participating lender, then discuss the project

Innovate Alabama’s SSBCI page lists approved LendAL lenders and a borrower interest form. LendAL uses credit enhancements to help lenders serve small businesses, with loan proceeds spent in Alabama. The lender still assesses the request and repayment ability.

InvestAL is a separate equity-investment route. LendAL borrowing must be repaid; neither should be described as an unrestricted startup grant. Ask a participating institution which enhancement fits the proposed loan and what documentation it requires.

Compare working capital for an operating Alabama business

Describe where the proceeds will be spent in Alabama when discussing LendAL. With Communities Unlimited, ask about the collateral and guarantee before spending time on the full file. If neither route fits yet, AssistAL can help with preparation.

Fora Financial: check fit before applying

An operating Alabama business can consider Fora alongside a community loan or a LendAL-supported bank proposal. Check the repayment schedule against the cash left after payroll and supplies.

  • Published starting criteria: 6+ months operating and a 570+ credit score.
  • Its loan page lists $240,000 annual revenue; its FAQ says $17,000 monthly. Confirm the applicable minimum.
  • Small-business-loan payments are daily or weekly. Approval depends on underwriting.

For contract work, distinguish financing the materials from buying long-lived equipment. See how the loan types differ and use the funding guide to calculate the gap before the contract pays.

Use Alabama’s preparation support before submitting the loan file

AssistAL through Alabama SBDC helps eligible entrepreneurs preparing for SSBCI and other qualifying financing. Its role is assistance with readiness, not a promise of an award. The network also provides a financing overview to help frame the options.

Make the application internally consistent: ownership names, the business address, tax records and financial statements should describe the same business. List existing loans and their payments, including financing secured by equipment. Explain any difference between reported sales and bank deposits before the lender has to ask.

The Alabama business requirements checklist can help you keep registration, local operating requirements and financing on separate tracks. A lender’s approval does not complete those setup tasks.

A lender may propose an SBA product separately from LendAL. See the Alabama figures in our SBA loan study for historical context.

Before choosing an Alabama loan

  • For LendAL, ask the lender whether your intended Alabama expenditure fits the program.
  • For Communities Unlimited, identify the collateral and personal guarantee you would provide.
  • For commercial financing, compare the cash deposited and payment schedule with the local lender’s written quote.

Alabama business loan questions

Should I use LendAL or an online lender?

Ask a participating LendAL lender whether your Alabama project fits first. An online provider is another comparison route for an operating business. Compare written costs and repayment obligations; state support does not establish which offer is cheaper.

Is LendAL a grant for Alabama businesses?

No. Innovate Alabama describes LendAL as lending that must be repaid. Its InvestAL program is an equity-investment route, not the same product.

Can a startup approach Communities Unlimited?

Its criteria include startups but require another source of income. Collateral, a personal guarantee and underwriting also apply.

Where do I find a LendAL lender?

Innovate Alabama’s SSBCI page includes an approved-lender list and a borrower interest form. Discuss your loan purpose and Alabama use of proceeds with the lender.
