Alabama daycare insurance: licensing standards and buying requirements
Alabama DHR’s licensing overview distinguishes licensed and license-exempt centers and links separate standards for centers and home programs. Give the insurance provider your actual category, legal operator and location. A center, family home and group home should not be described interchangeably on an application.
The center standards currently linked by DHR and its family and group home standards do not set a blanket facility general-liability dollar minimum. That limited finding does not resolve the requirements of a lease, an individual agreement, an employee coverage obligation or a vehicle policy.
Ask your DHR contact about requirements for your specific program and give the agent any written insurance specifications. If a landlord or other agreement requires a particular limit, additional-insured endorsement or certificate, request it as part of the proposal. Have the provider separate those obligations from optional additions so you can understand what you are buying.
Coverage to compare for an Alabama daycare or preschool
| Operation or exposure | Coverage question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Children and visitors at your premises | Which liability coverage applies to injuries and property damage, and which activities are excluded? |
| Supervision, instruction and care | Is professional liability included or separate? How does the proposal treat abuse or molestation allegations? |
| Staff and volunteers | Who is insured, and what employee injury or employer-liability coverage is needed? |
| Furniture, supplies and play equipment | Who owns the property, what values are insured and which losses or locations are excluded? |
| School pickup and off-site activities | What vehicle and business coverage is needed for the drivers, trips and activities described? |
Begin with a policy that describes your childcare operations. Ask the provider to explain general liability, professional liability and abuse or molestation coverage independently. A visitor’s fall, an allegation about supervision and a claim involving a staff member can raise different coverage questions. Check exclusions, insured persons and any separate limits before accepting a package.
For a leased center, distinguish the landlord’s building from your furnishings, supplies and tenant improvements. Ask which property is insured, how values are calculated and which causes of loss are excluded. If adding business-income protection, confirm its triggers, waiting periods and limitations; a closure does not automatically qualify simply because enrollment revenue stops.
How much does Alabama daycare insurance cost?
There is no single premium for every daycare. As a broad reference, Insureon’s national human-and-social-services customer medians are $91/month for general liability, $135 for a business owner’s policy and $99 for professional liability, checked September 14, 2026. That sample is broader than daycare; these are not state daycare averages or Simply Business prices.
Use those figures only to understand separate budget categories. A business owner’s policy can bundle liability and property, so do not add every figure as though it were a required package. Request a childcare-specific proposal using your program type, child count and ages, payroll, transportation, claims history and required limits.
Compare the total annual premium, deductible, included activities and any separate abuse-coverage limit. Ask about installment charges, endorsements and the cost of changes during the year. Two prices are comparable only after the provider explains the differences in protection.
Have each insurer quote the same capacity, actual enrollment, ages and services. Include extended hours, school-break care and transport if offered. A home without employees or vehicles is not a fair price comparison for a staffed center with pickup routes. Ask how changes to payroll or enrollment affect the premium during the year and at renewal.
Alabama workers’ compensation: five employees, with owners counted correctly
The Alabama workers’ compensation agency’s coverage FAQ states that the five-employee threshold includes full-time and part-time employees, corporate officers and LLC members. The state’s insurance requirements guidance explains the regularly-employed standard and applicable exceptions.
For example, a daycare organized as a two-member LLC with three regularly employed teachers should not assume it falls below the threshold because only the teachers appear on its staffing chart. Give the agent your entity structure and a complete roster. Ask which individuals count and whether any election affects personal coverage without changing the employer’s obligation.
Review the requirement before an additional hire takes the business to the threshold. If you are below it, ask about voluntary workers’ compensation and the consequences of carrying or declining it for your circumstances. Liability coverage for children and visitors does not replace coverage for employees’ work injuries.
Home programs and church or shared premises
For a daycare in your residence, tell the home insurer about the business and compare its proposed endorsement with a separate childcare policy. Ask how business equipment, play areas and childcare liability are treated. Confirm the capacity and services the insurer will cover; a residential address does not establish that the existing policy includes the operation.
If your program uses church or other shared space, identify who legally operates the daycare and who owns the premises. Obtain the host’s written insurance requirements, if any, rather than assuming its building policy protects your business. Have the agent address shared entrances, playgrounds, equipment and any requested additional-insured status.
License-exempt status does not itself answer those insurance questions. Use the licensing category to describe the program accurately, then review employer, property and contract obligations separately. The quote should match the actual operator and services regardless of the building’s owner.
School pickup and off-site activities
Before adding transport, tell the provider who owns the vehicles, who drives, seating capacity and the planned trips. Ask what commercial auto or hired/non-owned coverage is appropriate. A childcare liability certificate does not establish that a personal vehicle is insured for carrying children as part of the business.
Describe walking trips, playground visits, water activities and other services outside the classroom. Ask the insurer to confirm covered activities and exclusions in writing. Parental permission for an outing and insurance for that outing serve different purposes.
Prepare your Alabama daycare insurance quote
- Legal operator name, address, permit or certificate type and requested coverage date.
- Licensed capacity, actual enrollment, ages served, hours and all locations.
- Staff, volunteers, payroll and screening/supervision procedures.
- Transportation, field trips, water activities and other services offered.
- Existing policy, claim history and insurance requirements from leases or contracts.
Ask each provider to identify the named insured, covered activities, limits, deductibles, exclusions and endorsements. Confirm whether defense costs reduce any relevant limit and how claims must be reported. If a quote cannot cover an activity, resolve that gap rather than assuming a certificate will make the proposal acceptable.

Frequently asked questions
Does Alabama specify one liability limit for every daycare?
The DHR center and home standards reviewed here do not establish a blanket facility general-liability dollar minimum. Confirm your specific program requirements and agreements, then compare limits appropriate to your operations rather than assuming there are no insurance obligations.
Do LLC members count toward Alabama’s workers’ compensation threshold?
The state’s FAQ includes LLC members and corporate officers, along with full-time and part-time employees, in the five-employee count. Give the provider a complete roster and ask it to review any applicable exceptions or elections.
Does a church’s insurance automatically cover a daycare using its space?
Do not assume it does. Identify the daycare’s legal operator, review the host’s requirements and ask which policy covers the actual childcare activities. Check named-insured and additional-insured arrangements as appropriate before relying on a certificate.
What makes a low-cost daycare quote worth buying?
It must cover the operation you actually run. Compare supervision and abuse-related protection, limits, exclusions, deductibles and any transport needs first. Then compare the annual premium, payment fees and costs of required endorsements.
