Updated October 15, 2026. Data: U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of Economic Analysis, state household spending for 2025, released September 30, 2026. Next update: fall 2027.
Americans spent $763 per person on furniture, rugs and other home furnishings in 2025, and the total rose 3.8% from 2024. Spending per person was highest in District of Columbia ($1,014), Colorado ($971) and Florida ($949) and lowest in Mississippi ($572), Iowa ($619) and West Virginia ($624).
This counts furniture, plus furnishings like lamps, clocks and decorations, and floor coverings like rugs and carpet, bought by people who live in each state. Appliances and dishes are counted separately.
Washington, DC, is a single city, so it is better compared with other cities than with whole states. Moving tends to drive furniture buying, so states with many new arrivals or new homes can rank higher.
Spending per person in each state

Total spending grew fastest in Arkansas (+6.6%), South Carolina (+6.5%) and Maryland (+6.0%) and slowest in Minnesota (+2.3%), Indiana (+2.3%) and Louisiana (+2.5%).

Why it matters for small businesses
- Furniture follows moves. Compare with how many moving companies each state has.
- Small sellers have room. Upholstery, refinishing, resale and custom woodworking shops compete for this money. See how to set up an LLC.

How we counted
- Source: U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of Economic Analysis, state personal consumption spending by type of product (released September 30, 2026), category “Furniture, furnishings, and floor coverings,” 2019, 2024 and 2025, in current dollars (not adjusted for inflation).
- Per person: total spending divided by the department’s own population estimate for the same state and year.
- Where it’s counted: spending is assigned to the state where the buyer lives, as best the department can estimate.
- Change compares total spending in 2025 with 2024. Per-person change is a little lower because population grew.
