Why branch closings matter for small businesses

  • Cash businesses feel it first. Restaurants, salons, laundromats and retail shops that deposit cash daily may have to drive farther or switch to armored pickup.
  • Local lending relationships. Many small business loans still start with a local banker who knows the area. Fewer branches can mean fewer of those relationships, especially in rural towns.
  • Online banks fill some gaps, but they can’t take cash deposits, and some make it harder to get help in person.

About the data

  • Source: Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., BankFind Suite structure-change history. We counted every “Branch Closing” and “Branch Opening” record with an effective date in each 12-month window.
  • State is where the branch office is, not the bank’s home state.
  • Covers federally insured banks and savings institutions. Credit unions aren’t included. 3 closings and 1 opening in U.S. territories aren’t in the table, so the 50-state totals can differ slightly from the national counts above.
  • Lag: banks file changes after the fact, so the most recent months may rise as reports come in. We refresh this page regularly.
